A week after getting stunned by Appalachian State, the Wolverines were handed their worst beating since before Bo Schembechler worked the sideline at the Big House.
Dennis Dixon accounted for 368 yards and a career-high four touchdowns, helping the Ducks build a 25-point lead at halftime and cruise to an easy victory.

In their first game in 15 years without iconic coach Bill Cowher stalking the sideline, the Steelers blitzed, battered and bullied their way to a 34-7 win over the hapless Browns, whose season opener couldn't have gone much worse.
Ben Roethlisberger threw a career-high four touchdown passes as Pittsburgh built an early 17-0 lead and rolled for Tomlin, the easy-going 35-year-old former defensive coordinator who shares Cowher's passion -- not his volcanic personality.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s season of turmoil won't end with him competing for a championship, but as NASCAR's 10-race playoff begins next week, at least he'll get to see how his future could look at powerful Hendrick Motorsports.
The most popular driver in the Nextel Cup Series came up short of the Chase for the championship for the second time in three years Saturday night when he faced huge odds to make it interesting and never gave the guys ahead of him reason for concern.
``We deserved to be in the Chase,'' Earnhardt said after a blown engine ended his night. ``We love racing. We'll be all right. This is disappointing. These dang motors.'' ![]()

Earnhardt can't bring No. 8 with him to Hendrick

CONCORD, N.C. (AP) -- Dale Earnhardt Jr. will not be taking his familiar No. 8 with him to Hendrick Motorsports next season. Earnhardt is leaving Dale Earnhardt Inc. at the end of the season and had hoped to take No. 8 with him to his new team. His late grandfather, Ralph, used that number and Earnhardt picked it when he entered the Cup Series in 1999. Although teams do not own numbers -- they are leased through NASCAR -- DEI had the first right of refusal on the No. 8, and Hendrick officials said Wednesday they were unable to reach an agreement that would have made DEI pass on choosing the number for 2008. ``We've been working hard to secure the No. 8 for Dale Jr.'s car number next season,'' said Marshall Carlson, general manager of Hendrick Motorsports. ``Obviously, he has a tremendous history with that number, and we know how important it is to his fans. Unfortunately, we couldn't reach a point where the terms made sense, and now we have to move forward with other options.'' Hendrick officials didn't reveal what number Earnhardt will use when he starts his five-year deal with the team next season. His sponsor has also not been announced, but Hendrick officials said Budweiser will not be on his car. Earnhardt is widely recognized with his red Bud car and number, so this turn of events will give him a fresh new look next season. But having to part with his grandfather's number was difficult. ``Our hope was to carry the No. 8 with Dale Jr. to his new team, but the last proposal Hendrick Motorsports received from DEI just wasn't viable,'' said Kelley Earnhardt Elledge, his sister and business manager. ``It was a difficult decision, but all of us agreed that it was best to move in another direction,'' she said. ``There's disappointment, of course, but we look forward to working with Hendrick Motorsports on what will be a great program for Dale Jr. and his fans in 2008.'' |
JOLIET, Ill. -- Tony Stewart is a winner again.
And one day after a brief but intense lecture from Joe Gibbs, Stewart says his rift with teammate Denny Hamlin has been patched.
Stewart won the Nextel Cup race at Chicagoland Speedway on Sunday, breaking a 20-race winless streak that dated to last season and turning around what had otherwise been a tumultuous week for the two-time series champion.

Greg Zipadelli knows Tony Stewart's emotions sometimes get the better of him, especially in the public eye. The crew chief says it's also what makes the 20 driver a winner.
Between the bad breaks that cost him possible victories earlier in the year and this week's high-profile feud with Hamlin, Stewart seemed more relieved than elated by the victory -- though he still managed to climb the frontstretch fence in celebration.I'm not a big Tony Stewart fan, but I'm happy for him and his team's win! The question is: would Stewart have won this race were it not for Coach Gibbs' pre-race "talk"? I think maybe not...
